1. Accreditation
Confirm the school holds accreditation from a recognized accrediting body. Accreditation affects your ability to transfer credits, qualify for financial aid, and have your degree respected by employers and graduate programs.
2. Program fit
Does the school actually offer your subject and degree level — and does the curriculum match the career you're aiming for? Look past the program name to the courses and outcomes.
3. Format and flexibility
Fully online, on campus, or hybrid? Asynchronous or scheduled? Make sure the format fits your life, especially if you're working or raising a family.
4. Real cost after aid
Compare tuition, fees, and — crucially — what you'll pay after grants and scholarships. Watch for application fees and required testing you can avoid.
5. Transfer credit
If you have prior coursework, ask how many credits transfer in. The right policy can cut months off your timeline.
6. Support services
Advising, tutoring, tech support, and career services make a real difference in whether you finish. Ask what's included.
7. Outcomes
Graduation, employment, and student satisfaction tell you more than a ranking. Compare a short list of schools side by side before deciding.
